Ulster GAA has become an official signatory to the Sports for Nature Framework — a global initiative uniting the sporting community in taking meaningful action to protect and restore nature.
This significant step reflects Ulster GAA’s continued leadership in environmental sustainability and biodiversity, building on the success of initiatives such as the Sporting Nature Project, which is already supporting clubs and communities to take positive action for nature.
By joining the Sports for Nature Framework, Ulster GAA has committed to:
- Protecting and enhancing biodiversity across club grounds and local environments
- Promoting nature-positive practices within Gaelic Games
- Engaging communities and volunteers in environmental action
- Championing sustainability leadership across the sporting sector
This milestone aligns Ulster GAA with a growing international movement of sports organisations working collectively to safeguard the natural environment for future generations.
Through this framework, Ulster GAA will continue to empower clubs to create greener spaces, improve habitats, and strengthen the connection between sport, community, and nature.
Speaking on the announcement, Ulster GAA President Michael Geoghegan said:
“Ulster GAA recognises the important role that sport can play in protecting and enhancing the natural environment. Through initiatives such as the Sporting Nature Project, we have already begun embedding biodiversity action across our clubs and communities.
“Joining the Sports for Nature Framework represents a natural next step, aligning this work with a global movement for nature-positive sport. We also see strong value in collaborating with other sports organisations and engaging in shared learning to strengthen both our approach and overall impact.”
About Sports for Nature
Sports for Nature is a joint initiative of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, International Olympic Committee, United Nations Environment Programme, Convention on Biological Diversity and Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy.
It aims to deliver transformative action for nature through sport by 2030 and beyond, enabling sports organisations at all levels to champion nature and contribute to its protection and restoration. The framework provides a clear “game plan” to accelerate action and inspire others across the global sporting community to take meaningful steps for nature.
