Portadown Clubman is Translink Ulster GAA Young Volunteer of the Month

A hardworking PRO from Tír-na-nÓg GFC, Portadown has been awarded the Translink Ulster GAA Young Volunteer of the Month award for April 2018.

The award is presented each month to one young volunteer whose efforts best demonstrate the volunteering ethos and community spirit of the GAA.

Cathal Mercer (23), who has transformed match reporting for the club, was nominated in recognition of the time and energy he commits to both attending games and keeping the Tír-na-nÓg’s membership across the world updated on results and fixtures.

Presenting Cathal with his award, Gemma McMurray, Service Delivery Manager, Translink said:

“The Young Volunteer of the Month Award is designed to celebrate the important contribution young members of the GAA make to their clubs and communities. On behalf of Translink, I’d like to congratulate Cathal on winning the accolade.

“We were really impressed with how he took the initiative to fulfil a vacant role within his club, and with how he uses social media to keep people at home and abroad informed. His work receives very positive feedback from the community, so his volunteer efforts are clearly having a really positive impact on others.”

“Cathal took on the role of PRO spreading the great news of the club to Gaels no longer living at home. The hours he spends attending games is to be commended. On top of the PRO work Cathal helps coach the under 12s and attends committee meetings. This is great dedication for a young man. The standard of nominees was extremely high, so this recognition is a real credit to Cathal’s commitment and the impact he is making.”
