Fresh Start Through Sport is a multisport based intervention programme delivered by Ulster GAA, The Irish FA, Ulster Rugby and The Belfast Giants.
The ongoing aim of the programme is to utilise the universal appeal of sport to provide physical activity, sports-based learning and support for individuals, engaging with young people who are at risk of becoming involved in paramilitarism and/or organised crime.
The programme is supported by the Department for Communities, the Department of Justice and the PSNI, and participants in FSTS programme include young males and females aged 16-24 years from areas identified by the Fresh Start organisers and coordinators.
The four key sporting partners provide a series of sport-based modules, focusing on areas such as disability, racism and mental health in sport. The purpose of these modules is to guide and support participants in identifying and making positive life choices, with the eventual goal of providing a pathway into coaching and/or volunteering through their chosen sport.
Ulster GAA delivers introductory taster sessions in Gaelic Football and Hurling and Handball. It provides and opportunity to experience wheelchair Gaelic Games and participants also avail of basic CPR training.
